geraniumWe have two flower pots that sit next to our front door. Usually I follow the “rule” for container gardens and plant them in the three tiers (tall, medium, and trialling). This summer I decided to do what I think of as Italian containers, and chose one flower to fill the whole thing. The flower of choice was the peppermint twist geranium which I purchased through the Burpee website.

Sadly, we are just starting to see real growth, even though we are almost done with the month of July and they were planted towards the end of May. I am so sad, because the flowers are really beautiful and unique to anything that I saw in local nurseries. However, the effect of huge geranium plants, overflowing with flowers and greenery that I was going for just didn’t happen.

I think that I will give it another try next year though, because there is something quiet stunning about a single flower type in a large pot. This time I will get something from the local nursery though (they were already flowering back in early June, while these are just now flowering despite proper care). I’m not sure if it was just because they had to travel in the mail, or if this variety is a slow starter, but I do wish I could find this variety locally though, they are stunning!
