“Wood” you do it?
May 15th, 2008
Pardon the pun, but I couldn’t resist!
We have two large trees in our backyard. One of which is really nice and gorgeous in the spring (white blossoms everywhere), while the other one is not as nice and is a bit of a mess in the fall. The problem is, they are both planted near the middle of the yard. This makes using the yard for anything like volleyball or bad mitten impossible. It also makes our larger yard feel a lot smaller than it really is.
My husband wants to remove them both. I can see his point, but at the same time I hate to take out trees. However, being able to really use our yard space would be tons of fun. So, what would you do? Would you take them out? Or leave them be?

I’m not sure where you are, but there are several companies you could contact that make wood products from wood reclaimed from the “urban forest”.

They take wood from trees that need to be removed, or that people no longer want, and use it to make products that would otherwise be made from trees cut from living forests. I’m sure you can find a similar company in your area.
Then you can take the trees out, to make yourself happy, and still be confident that you are helping the environment.
Hope it helps.
I would do it if it kept you from playing back there. I would hesitate to do it, too, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Meanwhile, I would plant two new trees along the edges of your yard.
Sometimes you just have to cut them down. If you can’t replant new trees on your own property, consider donating money to plant some. American Forests is a pretty good charity.
Yes, I would do it. Having a usable backyard is more important. We just cut down a bunch of trees last weekend but they were either dead, too close to the house, or both. Of course we have hundreds on our property though. I’ve convinced my husband to not cut down the dead trees that aren’t near the house. They house a lot of birds and animals.
