Input please!

May 5th, 2008

We have a corner in our backyard that used to be a dog run. I have thought about what to do with it many times. I made a temporary “patio” there a couple of times while waiting for the final dicision about putting up a shed. Now that we have our Neuton Mower, we won’t be putting in a shed (since it needs a place with a plug and such). So, what would you do with the space?

Here is a photo of the space when I was using it as a “patio”:
Now in color!

And here is what it looks like today after a long cold winter:
the problem

Some of the issues:

  • there are no sprinklers in this area, so turning it into a garden would be hard.
  • there is bamboo growing in the back right corner, this is both good and bad (nice for privacy, bad because it does tend to come out into the space).
  • weeds always grow through the gravel.
  • there is basically no budget for the fix up (at most perhaps $100).

I have some ideas brewing, but I would love to hear your ideas and feed back too!

I think you answered your question in the first line of the post.

“We have a corner in our backyard that used to be a dog run.”

Put a dog in there and let it run!

More seriously, water features are always nice. What about a small pond in the corner? Put it just in front of the bamboo. I’m sure you could get a small pond tub and maybe a little pump to keep the water moving for less than $100.

Hmm…I thought water feature, too…We have a ton of bamboo, and while it does tend to encroach if you’re not vigilant, it’s so inviting. It makes a real retreat in the yard. I plan on putting a hammock right by it. So maybe some kind of grotto/retreat/reading spot. A nice little place to just get out of the way. I’m not sure about the cost, but some pea gravel, or something of the like and some paving stones out to an Adirondack chair and little bubbly fountain (if you can work out the electrical end of things)…that’s what I’d dream of doing and probably find some roadblock to, stemming from my own laziness, most likely.

Well, it all depends on what you can find for free. I see pavers and sand for free a lot (or for cheap).. I’d be tempted to hardscape it in with a real patio (sand base with pavers on top.
