To tree, or not to tree.

April 29th, 2008

My husband and I have a battle on our hands. A battle over trees.

There are two trees in our yard that he is out to get. He wants them gone. Me on the other hand, I hate to remove a tree unless it has a serious problem. When we first moved into our house we had to remove 3 trees because they were dying and infested with bugs, but these trees that my hubby wants gone, they are just fine.

They just happen to be in the wrong spots. One is a walnut tree, and we don’t really eat walnuts. The other is an aspen that has grown crooked because it was planted on the windy side of the house.

So, to tree or not to tree, that is the question at our house these days.

Spring?!

April 28th, 2008

After writing my post this morning, I went outside and found gorgeous weather. Of course this meant that I had to get some serious weeding done! Three hours and one sunburn later, one of the flowerbeds is ready to go.

I also went to Lowes and got some flowers that will hopefully get planted tomorrow before the snow storm arrives. Yes, you heard me, it is supposed to snow tomorrow night! When is spring going to arrive for good?

Garden plans!

April 28th, 2008

It is still cold in our neck of the woods, but the forecast promises some warmer weather this week. I have some big plans for our garden. There is a planting bed that needs to be made in the backyard, as well as a small planting bed around our old satellite dish.

Luffas climbing!

We had planned to remove the satellite dish all together, but since it looks like it will be hard to do, I plan to improve on the planting bed, making it a permanent fixture. Then I am going to plant kiwis!

The photo above was from two summers ago when I tried to grow luffas. Sadly our growing season was not long enough, and just as we started to get flowers, fall arrived and they died. But, since we can grow kiwis and they are hardy enough to live through our winter, I am going to do it!

Keep your fingers crossed for us to have good weather!

Eco-Friendly Garden Tip

April 27th, 2008

This is a great tip from the DIY Network show Desperate Landscapes. I have always wanted to get a rain barrel since I first saw them in a catalog. I since saw an even cooler way to save rain water, but that is a post for a future time (when our plans our done). However, the rain barrel is still the easiest, and most economical way to save all that water!

Hope you enjoy the clip!
